On October 30, 2005, WCRC held celebrated our 15th Anniversary and the 7th Annual Sisters of Fire Awards.  Below are speeches from some of our Sisters of Fire honorees that day.

Suheir Hammad

Suheir Hammad was born in Amman, Jordan to Palestinian refugee parents and immigrated to Brooklyn NY when she was five years old. As a poet Suheir has been called "a new voice with an authentic blend of language that's her own, and music that belongs to the streets" and is the first Palestinian starring in a Broadway show. Her appearance on the debut episode of HBO's Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry merited generous media praise and her work has been published in numerous periodicals, including The Amsterdam News, Essence, STRESS Hip-Hop Magazine and the Middle East Report.

Angela Davis

Angela Davis is known internationally for her ongoing work to combat all forms of oppression in the U.S. and abroad. Over the years, she has been active as a student, teacher, writer, scholar and activist/organizer. She is a living witness to the historical struggles of the contemporary era. Professor Davis's political activism be­gan when she was a youngster in Birmingham, Alabama, and continued through her high school years in New York. She has a long-standing commitment to prisoners' rights.

Beckie Masaki

Beckie Uta Masaki is co-founder and executive director of the Asian Women's Shelter (AWS) in San Francisco. The agency is dedicated to ending domestic violence by promoting the social, economic and political self-determination of women. She is a founding member and on the steering committee of the Asian & Pacific Islander Institute on Domestic Violence. Beckie has provided peer-based training and technical assistance to a wide range of grassroots women's groups on local, state, national and international levels.
