TEMPO Summer Workshops


If you represent a non-profit organization wanting to use technology to promote your mission, or an individual wanting to be freelance journalist, these introductory, hands on workshops are designed to equip you with tools to report the stories that impact your community.

The workshops are led by TEMPO Program Coordinator Shanina Shumate, a graduate of the TEMPO program who has produced news and documentary pieces featured online as well as both local and national radio programs.

Friday June 5, 4-6pm | Mini Disc Portable Recorder $25
HIMD is a small, portable device that is used to record audio. You can use the Mini Disc Recorder for various occasions such as recording events, conferences, ceremonies, reporting stories to listening to your favorite music. This hands-on workshop will help you to learn the basic of how to use a Mini Disc Recorder along with all the benefits.

Saturday June 6, 10am-12:30pm | Interviews techniques with Mini Disc $25
This workshop will prepare you to use a Mini Disc Recorder to conduct your interviews. Interviews give you the context to your story. So it makes it even more important that your interviews have clear sound. We will help you learn the basic of how to use the mini disc recorder along with practicing & role playing various forms of questioning, techniques to have an influential & engaging interview.

Friday June 12, 4-6:30pm | Voice Coaching & Narration $25
Body movement, relaxation techniques, tone of voice and facial expressions are some of the key elements in preparing to read a narration. This innovative, and creative workshop will help you write a narration in combination with utilizing voice coaching techniques.

Friday June 19, 5-7:30pm | Narration, Interviews, Telling the story $25
How do you write for radio? Script writing involves thinking about what sounds good to the ear not how it is written on paper. Come and learn strategies for how to connect your audience to your story.

Saturday June 20, 10am-1pm | All in one session $75

Research, Pitch and Interview Technique with Mini Disc: The All-in-One session will expose you to the beginning process of how reported stories are developed and delivered. This insightful workshop will give you identified ingredients about the heart and soul of the production process.

How do you promote and distribute your work using technology as an anchor? Learn some of the strategies and techniques TEMPO used to promote and distribute their news pieces, documentaries and workshops.
